GIVING

The "MILKY" Way

The thought of writing this article titled “The Milky Way” was likened to a song performed by The Train in “Drops of Jupiter”. Nevertheless, as of this writing, this article was about an outreach program developed annually by KLMA Philippines’ Red Committee through the Corporate Social Responsibility Project.

In the previous year, the Red Committee, in collaboration with Jollibee, hosted a Christmas Party for the children of Bukas Palad Foundation of the Philippines in Tramo, Pasay City. The party turned out to be a happy event with the Jollibee mascot’s performance during a dance number. It was followed by parlor games, and distribution of jolly-meals to children.

KLMA Red Committee at Saint Rita Orphanage, Sucat, Parañaque City

This year, the Red Committee, led by Ms. Joy Tesorero, visited Saint Rita Orphanage, Inc. in Sucat, Parañaque City and distributed boxes of milk to infants and non-infants in the spirit of sharing during the Holiday Season.

Saint Rita Orphanage, originally known as Home of Children, is a non-stock, non-profit religious institution and an apostolate of the Congregation of the Augustinian Recollect Sisters. It was founded by the late Mother Carmen Alba, A.R. who then riding through Quiapo and Sta. Cruz, Manila, saw small boys pestering vehicle riders, especially those in cars, asking for alms.

The center started with two parcels of land donated by a very generous person and later became the site for the orphanage. The chapel soon followed when donations from other people came in to fulfill Mother Carmen Alba’s mission. Today, Saint Rita Orphanage is a child–caring and adoption agency for children who are abandoned and neglected by their biological parents.

Before the visit, Ms. Tesorero and members of the committee went to Saint Rita Orphanage to conduct a survey and determine the needs of the orphanage. The team was warmly accepted by the sisters who gave them a tour around the facilities. During the tour, the team realized that the center was already short on milk supply. After the tour and exchange of pleasantries, the team returned to the office and reported to the management what they had observed during their visit. In response to the need of the orphanage, the Red team arranged for the purchases of Bona milk products to be given away as part of KLMA Philippines’ CSR Project.

Despite the heart-melting stories brought about by their abandonment, the atmosphere in the orphanage was cheerful, lively and warm - thanks to the sisters, nurses, caregivers and volunteers who had provided the much needed care and attention to the orphans.

The CSR Project would not have been successful without the continuous support of the KLMA Philippines Management through its regular outreach programs. The gift giving, sharing and time spent to be in the company of the less fortunate does not only bring smile to their faces. It made them realize that there are still people who cares.
